The Rain Has a Reason

“As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.” Isaiah 55:10–11 (NIV)

There was a season in my life when I felt like I was walking through a spiritual drought. I still believed in God, but I did not feel as close to him as I once had. My prayers felt quiet. Sometimes it seemed like they were hitting the ceiling and falling right back down. I looked around at my life and felt that some things were not going the way I had hoped. I felt dry, weary, and discouraged, like I was standing in a field of cracked ground with no clouds anywhere in sight.

But even in that place, God was still present.

Looking back, I can see that he was gently reminding me, in small moments, that I wasn't forgotten. It was not always through something big or dramatic. Sometimes it was a quiet reminder, an unexpected conversation, a scripture that touched my heart, a door that opened, or even a delay that protected me from something I could not see. Those little moments reminded me that God had not abandoned me in the dry place. He had allowed me to be there for a reason.

Sometimes we think dry seasons mean God is far away, but many times they are the very places where he is preparing something in us. A seed does not grow on the surface. It grows in hidden places, buried in the dark, long before anyone sees evidence of life. The seed may not understand what the cold ground is doing, but God knows what he planted and what he is preparing.

Rain may interrupt our plans, but in God’s design, rain brings life. A farmer does not curse the storm just because it delays his afternoon. He understands that rain is necessary for the field to produce. In the same way, there are seasons in our lives that may feel inconvenient, painful, or uncertain, but God can use them to water the places in us that have become tired, dry, or weak.

Just as the earth needs rain and snow to bud and flourish, our hearts need the word of God to revive us, strengthen us, and remind us of his promises.

His word does not return empty.

  • It reaches places in us that people cannot see.

  • It softens what has become hardened.

  • It brings hope where discouragement has settled.

  • It reminds us that even when we cannot yet see the harvest, God is still working beneath the surface.

So, if you are in a dry season, don’t assume nothing is happening. Don’t believe the lie that God has forgotten you. The ground may look barren right now, but that doesn’t mean it’s empty. God may use this very season to strengthen your roots, deepen your faith, and prepare you for the fruit that’s still to come.

Hold on to his promises. Keep praying, even when it feels quiet. Keep trusting, even when you can’t see the rain. The same God who sends water to the earth knows exactly how to refresh your soul. And in his perfect timing, what felt like a drought can become the very place where new life begins.

Prayer—Heavenly Father, thank you for reminding me that every season has a purpose in your hands. Even when life feels dry, quiet, or uncertain, help me to trust that you are still working beneath the surface. Refresh my heart with your words and strengthen my faith when I cannot see what you are doing. Teach me to keep your promises and believe that nothing you speak over my life will return empty. Water the dry places in me, deepen my roots, and prepare me for the fruit you are bringing in your perfect timing. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Your Turn

  1. Have you ever experienced a season where you felt spiritually dry or distant from God? What helped you keep going?

  2. What is one promise from God’s Word that you can hold on to during a difficult or quiet season?

  3. Where might God be working beneath the surface in your life, even if you cannot see the results yet?
