Feeling Ordinary? God Really Loves Your Type!
But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” (1st Samuel 16:7 NIV)
Can I be honest with you? I feel like the times I’ve really needed people the most are the times I’ve felt the most abandoned. Have you ever felt like that? If so, raise your hand right now! Okay, I realize the teacher in me is coming out and it’s ridiculous to ask you to raise your hand because of course we can’t really see each other. Yet, there is something so transparent when we’re honest enough to admit to ourselves or to each other that we’re just ordinary or that we’ve been neglected and we feel overlooked.
Do you sometimes feel like all the beautiful, talented people in the world are getting all the attention and are being used in all their gifts? Whew! I hope I’m not alone, a couple of minutes watching TV or flipping through magazines often leaves me depressed. Sometimes I even get upset walking through my favorite bookstores, as I look at all those gorgeous celebrities on the covers of best-sellers living out their dreams. I think to myself, “oh well I guess I’m just not good enough.” Have you ever said something that lame?
Greg Laurie, pastor of Harvest Christian Fellowship who does a great podcast on harvest.org put a great spin on the concept of Christians who are feeling overlooked, neglected, ordinary and underused. He points us to the story of David. He explains that it was never man’s plan to appoint David as King but one of his brothers as they looked at the outward appearance. However, it was always God’s plan to use David because He knew David’s heart as God looks at the inner man.
David’s had his share of struggles but he was prudent, he worked hard, wise, repentant, he used his gifts for God’s glory, he was humble, and he always went to God when he was at his weakest. He was a dreamer…
So my question for you today is how can God use your dreams, your ordinary to do extraordinary things for His kingdom and His glory?
