Joy That Stays

“I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.” — John 15:11 (NIV)

What Joy Looks Like to Me

My version of joy looks like a quiet day with no pressure. Just me, my comfy chair, and a book I can disappear into. I love those moments when my phone is silent, no one needs anything from me, and I can simply be.

But those days don't come often. Life gets busy with school, work, family, responsibilities, and pressure. Even when everything around me becomes quiet, my mind sometimes keeps going. That's when joy can feel far away.

His Joy, Not Mine

Jesus says he wants his joy to be in us and for our joy to be complete. That word complete stands out to me. Sometimes I have wondered whether I am supposed to feel joyful all the time because I am a Christian.

But Jesus never told us to perform joy or pretend everything is okay. He said his joy would be in us. His joy doesn't depend on a perfect day, good news, or everything falling into place. It comes from being connected to him. Jesus is not asking us to manufacture joy. He invites us to stay close to him.

Joy Can Be Quiet

Joy doesn't always look like laughter, excitement, or a big smile. Sometimes joy looks like peace amid uncertainty. It is the quiet assurance that God is still near when you are tired, overwhelmed, or unsure of what comes next. Happiness may change with our circumstances, but biblical joy is rooted in who God is.

Joy is also a fruit of the Spirit. That means we do not have to create it on our own. As we remain connected to Jesus, He grows it within us. Some seasons may feel heavier than others, and joy may seem small or quiet. But quiet joy is still joy. Jesus is not asking you to fake it. He is asking you to receive what only He can give.

Joy That Stays

If you're still praying, still seeking God, still opening your heart to him, his joy is working in you. Maybe slowly. Maybe quietly. Maybe differently than you expected.

But Jesus promises a joy that is complete, a joy that is not temporary, fake, or reserved for people who seem to have everything together. His joy is available to you. And his joy stays.

Prayer

Father, thank you for being the true source of my joy. When life feels heavy, and my circumstances are not what I hoped they would be, help me remember that my joy does not have to disappear. Teach me to remain close to Jesus and receive the joy only he can give. Replace pressure with peace, discouragement with hope, and emptiness with your presence. Help me trust that even when I cannot see it or feel it strongly, you are still working in me. Let your joy become full, lasting, and complete in my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Your Turn

What does joy look like in your life right now?
Are you depending on your circumstances to make you joyful, or are you allowing Jesus to be the source of your joy?
This week, take a few quiet moments with God. Tell him honestly where you feel tired, discouraged, or empty. Then ask him to help you recognize the joy he is already growing within you.
