Forged by Fire: A Faith That Overcomes

“For everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.” 1 John 5:4 (NIV)

There have been seasons in my life where it felt like everything around me was breaking. I’ve been talked about behind my back, lied on, and betrayed by people I trusted. Conversations I shared in confidence were repeated like entertainment for others.

I’ve experienced losing people I loved, losing things I worked hard for, and losing pieces of what I thought my life would look like. And if I’m being honest, those moments didn’t just hurt, they changed me. There were times I questioned everything, wondered why God would allow so much pressure, so much heat, and so much breaking. But then I started to see things differently. I thought about how steel is made.

Forged By Fire

On the show Forged in Fire, they take plain, ordinary steel, nothing special to look at, and they put it through a process. First, it’s placed in intense fire until it’s glowing hot. Then it’s hammered, over and over again, bent, shaped, and twisted. Sometimes it looked as if it were being destroyed. And just when it seemed like it couldn’t take any more, it was put back into the fire again. Then comes the moment that always stands out to me, the steel is taken from the fire and plunged into water. That sudden shift, that shock, that cooling, and somehow, after all of that, it comes out stronger, sharper, more refined, and even beautiful.

That’s when it hit me. That’s what God has been doing in me.

Every lie spoken about me.

Every betrayal.

Every time, I was misunderstood.

Every loss I didn’t see coming.

“That was the fire.”

Every tear I cried.

Every moment, I felt like I was being stretched beyond what I could handle.

Every situation that forced me to grow when I didn’t want to.

“That was the hammer.”

Every time I had to walk away from people, situations, or versions of myself that I loved.

“That was the twisting and shaping.”

And those quiet moments when God pulled me out of the chaos and gave me peace, even if just for a moment.

“That was the water.”

What I didn’t realize then is what I know now

I wasn’t being destroyed. I was being forged. 1 John 5:4 reminds me that if I’m born of God, I overcome the world, not because life is easy, not because people always treat me right, but because my faith carries me through what tries to break me. My victory isn’t in avoiding the fire. My victory is in surviving it. My victory is in coming out stronger, wiser, and still standing. And most importantly, still believing. Because faith is what keeps me going when I don’t understand.

Faith is what steadies me when everything else feels unstable. Faith is what reminds me that what I’m going through is not the end of my story. Just like that steel, I’ve been through the fire. But I didn’t fall apart. I was made stronger.

Step Into Your Victory

Stop seeing your struggles as setbacks and start seeing them as shaping seasons. Stop giving people the power to define your story when God is still writing it, and stop questioning your strength when you’ve already survived things meant to break you. Take a moment to reflect on what you’ve made it through that should have taken you out, but didn’t. That’s not luck or coincidence, that’s God.

Choose faith over fear, growth over bitterness, and healing over holding on to what hurts you. Most importantly, choose to keep going, because the fire didn’t finish you; it refined you. Walk like someone who knows they’ve been strengthened. Speak like someone who knows they’ve been preserved. Live like someone who knows what they’ve already overcome. And if this spoke to you, don’t keep it to yourself. Share it. Encourage someone else and remind them that what they’re going through is not the end, it’s part of the process. Your faith isn’t just for you. It’s proof that victory is possible, and that same victory is available to them, too.

Prayer—Heavenly Father, thank you for carrying me through every fire I’ve faced. Even when I didn’t understand the pain, you were strengthening and refining me. Help me trust You in every season and remind me I am not being broken, I am being built. Lord, strengthen my faith so I choose trust over fear, healing over hurt, and growth over bitterness. When life feels heavy, remind me that because I am born of you, I have already overcome. Use every trial in my life for your glory. Let my story encourage others and remind them that victory is possible through you. I trust you; I thank you, and I will keep going. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Your Turn

  • When you look back, can you identify a “fire,” “hammer,” or “water” moment that God used to strengthen your faith?

  • What would it look like for you to choose faith over fear in your current season?
