It’s Not Wasted

“As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.” — Isaiah 55:10–11 NIV

Sometimes life hits you in a way that makes you cry harder than you thought you could. The kind of cry where it feels like your soul is leaking out. But eventually, after the tears slow down and your breathing settles, you sit still and realize something. You’re still here. Still breathing. Still standing. You cried like you needed to, and now you’re okay. Not perfect. Not finished. But okay.

That’s what I see when I read this verse.

God says his word is like rain and snow, it comes down for a reason. It waters the ground. It makes things grow. It produces something. And it doesn’t go back to heaven until it does what he sent it to do. That means nothing he speaks over your life is wasted. Not a single thing. Not your waiting. Not your prayers. Not even your tears.

And yet, sometimes it feels like he’s forgotten. Like he’s skipped over you. Like everybody else is getting their breakthrough, and you’re just stuck waiting on the sidelines. You start wondering, is God still working on my story? Did he change his mind? Did I mess something up?

I’ve felt that. I’ve looked at other people’s joy while sitting in the middle of my own quiet season. I’ve prayed and prayed, asking God to do something, anything. And then I’ve looked up and said, okay, God, are you skipping over me? But at the same time, there’s this little voice in me, soft but strong that says, no, it’s just not your turn yet.

And when your turn comes, it will be worth the wait.

That kind of waiting isn’t easy. It’s frustrating. It’s stretching. It feels like planting seeds and watching nothing happen for days or weeks or months. But Isaiah 55 tells me that when God sends something out like a word, a promise, a purpose, it will do exactly what he said it would do. Even if I don’t see the fruit yet, the roots are growing.

Sometimes you cry and feel like nothing is changing. But rain never shows results instantly either. First the soil gets soft. Then the seeds start to shift. And eventually, what was buried starts to rise. You don’t always see the process, but the process is still working.

God’s word will never return empty. It always hits its target. It always reaches its purpose. And even if you don’t understand how or when, you can trust that the One who spoke it hasn’t forgotten what He said. He hasn’t forgotten you.

So, if you're in a waiting season, I want to remind you that your tears are not wasted. Your prayers are not wasted. Your hope is not wasted. You are not behind. You are not invisible. And you are not disqualified just because your harvest hasn’t come yet.

God knows what he’s doing. And when he says it's time, nothing will be able to stop what he’s planted in you from growing. Not fear. Not doubt. Not delay. His timing isn’t based on when you want it. It’s based on when you're ready for it. And that’s not punishment, that’s protection.

So, cry if you need to. Rest when you’re tired. Keep holding on to the word. Because it is working. Even when it feels slow. Even when it feels silent. Even when you don’t understand it yet.

Your season is coming. And when it arrives, it will be right on time.

Prayer—Lord, thank you for reminding me that nothing you allow is wasted. Thank you that my tears, my prayers, my waiting, and my quiet seasons still have purpose in your hands. When I feel forgotten, help me remember that you are still working. When I feel behind, remind me that your timing is perfect. Soften the places in my heart that have become weary and help me trust that even when I cannot see fruit, roots are still growing. Give me strength to keep holding on to your words, because I know it will not return empty. Lord, help me rest in the truth that what you have planted in me will grow at the right time. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Your Turn

  1. What is one area of your life where you feel like you are waiting on God to move?

  2. Have you ever looked back and realized that something you thought was wasted was working for your good?

  3. What promise, Scripture, or word from God do you need to keep holding on to in this season?
